*RULING REGARDING ENGAGEMENT DAAWAT*

What is engagement in accordance with Shariah? In my place, Dawaate engagement is as big as that of wedding, with men and women gatherings. What is the ruling regarding it?

According to Shariah, the act of seeking surety of nikah, one one side from the other, is known as mangni (engagement). If the other side accept the relationship, it means the engagement is done. It means,in accordance with Shariah, a promise, which shouldn't be broken without genuine reason, and if done is a sin.
According to Hazrat Ali radi allahu anhu, he said that I had seeked permission for Hazrat Fatimah radi allahu anha from Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wasalam. When I sat in front of him, I became silent as his mightiest prevented me from uttering anything. When Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alaihi wasalam himself asked me the reason for coming, I remained silent. He then himself asked, whether I had come to seek Fatimah rd. I replied in affirmative.

It was accepted and verbally confirm, no gathering of people, nor preparation. (Muasharti Masail safa 75).
Hence, to gather people for engagement, huge gathering of men and women,Dawaat for them (invitation),is not in accordance with Shariah and is not expected. In fact, presence of women, create lots of issues,which everyone is aware of.
