If the prayer behind the Imaam has begun, can the latecomers or people joining midway recite san'aa?

In case of Jahri prayer (In which Imaam recite surah loud), as long as Imaam has not started with recitation san'aa can be recited. If the Imam had already started with recitation, it is not permissible to recite san'aa instead one is required to hear the recitation of Imaam.

For the prayers, where the recitation is not loud one needs to make an assumption whether the Imaam might have started with the recitation or not. If he thinks otherwise, he shouldn't recite it. Salah will be considered done even without the recitation of san'aa.
